What are contactless stickers? How can you use them to pay?

Last updated: 19 March 2014

You may have seen our announcement yesterday with UniCredit in Slovakia where we were selected to supply stickers that contain a contactless payment function. These little beauties based on MasterCard PayPass technology can be stuck to any object turning it into a banking card. This means you no longer have to leave the house with a handful of change.

UniCredit customers will be able to use the contactless feature on payments under 20 euros, while transactions of larger amounts will require a PIN code. Payments can be made in fast food restaurants, cinemas, supermarkets and other retail outlets across Slovakia, with its established contactless payment market of over 3,000 acceptance points in place.

It sounds magic and not being technical I had to wander over to the product team and ask them to show me how the contactless sticker works. Luckily, I work in the same office as them but for the rest of you here’s a short video that explains the concept nicely, all set to some nice soft rock. Enjoy!
