Contactless Challenge Day 2: Post Office successes and cinematic failures

Last updated: 20 March 2014

Our Contactless Challenge continues apace thanks to our determined NFC challengers Ewan and Jon. At the end of the first day they were matching each other, point for point, but Jon has now taken the lead with 101 points to Ewan’s 76.

Despite Ewan managing to purchase some no doubt unhealthy treats (as the Krispy Kreme challenge was originally intended) for his co-workers from Marks & Spencer with NFC payment, unfortunately his trip to the cinema the previous night was not NFC-enabled, but we’re sure that won’t stop him from completing the task at some point. He claims that yesterday was a ‘dark day with the contactless challenge.’ We hope it hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm and look forward to more successes.

Jon, on the other hand, added some cultural sightseeing to the challenge, ticking off one of his tasks by spending time at the Museum of London and becoming an expert in topics ranging from prehistoric times before Londinium was founded by the Romans to last year’s Occupy London movement. He also attempted to complete the Thames Clipper boat ride challenge but was foiled by the lack of ticket booths or inspectors. He is currently leading as he managed to spend an entire day living contactless-ly, having secured all his meals and snacks with NFC.

In addition, and luckily for us, both were able to source some postcards and stamps from the Post Office to send us an old-fashioned postcard from London to France via traditional mail. We very much look forward to receiving it. Whether our Challengers accept the crowdsourced suggestion made by Richard Lai of Engadget to perform karaoke paid for by NFC remains to be seen, but bonus points will go towards any attempts and we can always extend the scoreboard!

So, based on today’s experiences and our Contactless Challengers valiant attempts, let’s take a look at the leaderboard. Remember, you can help our Challengers by tweeting suggestions at them @Gemalto or by using the hashtag #GemaltoNFC.
