Jon Choo went into Day 3 of our Contactless Challenge with a twenty-five point lead following a hugely successful second day. However, a previously despondent Ewan MacLeod resolved to pick himself up and get back on the NFC payment wagon with a vengeance.
Embracing (or should that be enduring) the London rain, Ewan headed out for lunch, at first considering a salad from French patisserie, Paul, before being put off by a lack signage indicating clear acceptance of NFC payments. Pret A Manger’s well-known acceptance of contactless payments won them a customer in this instance, as Ewan stuck with what he knew to help him get back on track.
Reinvigorated by the knowledge that his mobile was fully functional, Ewan headed to another contactless staple, McDonald’s, treating himself to a large Coca Cola and salad on us, finding it all too easy to spend more than he planned. He also successfully fed himself for a whole day using only contactless, securing himself an additional 12 points in the process.

Meanwhile, Jon was picking up vital points by successfully buying his lunch at EAT. However, both bloggers have yet to find a barber’s that can offer them contactless payment for a smart haircut. We are only three days in, but we are already learning a lot about the contactless experience. Day 4 is likely to reveal more about how customers and businesses should approach contactless payments, but as Day 3 comes to a close, Ewan has slightly closed the gap to just 23 points.
