What is Mobile World Congress’ buzzword this year? It’s NFC

Last updated: 20 March 2014

According to @BBCTech it will be anyway. Great article from Jane Wakefield summing up key themes and topics happening out here in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress #MWC11. Delighted to see our very own Philippe Vallée, Head of our Telecom business quoted:

NFC in the subway“Every Mobile World Congress has a buzzword – more often than not an acronym – and this year it is likely to be NFC – Near Field Communication.

NFC is the technology that allows mobile phones to be turned into payment devices, replacing credit cards, loyalty cards, travel cards and other vouchers.

“All the applications that use a physical card can one day or another be transferred onto the mobile phone,” said Phillippe Vallée, from Gemalto, an NFC technology firm.

Paying for tapas may be about to get a lot easier.”

We definitely feel that the environment is right now for large NFC deployments and have been receiving many questions about it during the show. Last week Mark Roberti, editor of RFID Journal, which covers all forms of radio frequency identification, including NFC, got in touch with the blog to ask us his readers most frequent questions – you can see the answers here.

For a demo of NFC technology and to see how a mobile phone is now almost as versatile as a Swiss army knife, come along to our stand. Hall 8 – Stand 8A102
