Even as we continue to see some brilliant concepts for IoT projects in our IoTMaker competition, it’s nice to reflect on some of the real-world applications that are on the market.
Using our Cinterion MIM (Machine Identification Module), Limmex (a provider of personal safety solutions) is now able to deploy a single product design across multiple markets quickly and easily. Using our solution, they’ve created a new process for efficient manufacturing to help produce a watch that can support people with particular care or security needs such as children, VIPs, lone workers, the elderly or individuals with health problems by triggering an emergency call to friends at the push of a button. As you can see from the image, the button is easy to reach and very discrete; but it’s not the only key feature. Whilst it still looks like a traditional Swiss watch, it also features a built-in microphone and loudspeaker to enable communication to enable communication with emergency services.
Here’s how it works:-
So, why is rolling out this watch across numerous countries so much easier for Limmex? With ODC (On-Demand Connectivity), logistics and device provision for Operator Networks has been revolutionized. Consequently, there is now no need for manufacturers to create numerous device variants and profiles to enable the cellular connection of devices in a specific country after they’ve been deployed to consumers.
The challenge in delivering these devices historically came down to the way cellular networks work: in every country, Limmex would have had to work with each operator to provide variants on the technology to manufacture its devices. By leveraging our M2M technology, Limmex has managed to simplify the manufacturing process dramatically, and accelerate its global rollout.
So, for example, Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, no longer has to worry about wearing an ultra-sonic watch for Superman to listen out for, but can rely on the Internet of Things to deliver his call for help securely. Indeed, Jimmy can even use the microphone and speaker to discuss the crisis with Kal-El, allowing Superman to make an informed decision as to whether to stop battling Zod to fly around the world to help Jimmy with his problem, or to leave him to summon emergency services instead.
One of the particularly nice things about this use case is that it shows how IoT can help out behind the scenes – after all, the watch existed before Limmex embraced our M2M technology, but now technology has made it much easier to produce.
