2013 – the year of connections

Last updated: 11 April 2014

Is it the year of mobile advertising? The year of NFC and mobile payments? Well, according to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and AllThingsD.com, 2013 could be the year the ‘Connected Home’ becomes a reality.

We have blogged before about smart homes, sharing our perspective on the one hosted by the GSMA at Mobile World Congress last year. This drew on machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and smart sensors that give the consumer a more automated, yet intuitive, lifestyle. Just imagine your fridge tweeting you to tell you what groceries to buy, or washer and dryers messaging your smart TV once the wash cycle is complete.

The BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones is also at CES and has outlined what he expects to find at the show, including the launch of multiple new smartphones with new apps that let the user monitor their own health or switch on the lights at home via the mobile device.

So, 2013 does look set to be the year of connected devices, smart connections and machines talking to each other for an improved user experience. I’m sure you may also have heard and read about wearable technology: devices that are mobile but can remain connected via the internet, from tablets to wrist watches to ski goggles. If, like most people, you have made New Year resolutions to improve your health, this wearable technology can help you track your fitness levels too to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Sounds promising doesn’t it? Well, as my fellow bloggers have touched on before, any connected device also throws up security issues and we have already taken note of this trend and are working closely with Trustonic to develop secure technology for connected devices to ensure your connected experience is not only convenient but also secure.

So, all that remains to be seen is whether the connected predictions ring true this year. And, for a full list of what to expect at CES 2013, this overview from MSN Tech could be useful.
