Five IoT gadgets to take on your next holiday

It’s the beginning of September, and even though you might have just come back from your summer holiday, the back-to-work blues are enough reason to start planning your next adventure. In a previous post we looked into the top smart cities to visit if you are an IoT enthusiast. Now let’s see which are the best IoT gadgets to take on your next holiday.

Whether it’s something to keep you occupied while travelling, keep you dry on a rainy day or let your transfer your holiday photos with ease, here’s our rundown of some of the best connected travel tech.

A connected suitcase

Let’s start with one of the most essential things for your journey – your suitcase! The Bluesmart suitcase has a built-in GPS chip that lets you track it anywhere in the world, so you don’t need to worry about your luggage going missing anymore. It’s controlled by a smartphone app, which is great as long as your phone doesn’t run out of battery. Which it won’t since the smart suitcase contains a built-in power bank that has the capacity to charge your phone up to six times.

And that’s not everything. This suitcase has a built-in scale which will notify you if you’re exceeding your airline’s luggage allowance. So no more surprise repacking at the airport!

A connected SD card

The last thing you want to do when you’re on a holiday is transferring photos from one device to another, faffing around with memory cards, cameras and laptops, when you could be spending longer at the beach or extend your visit at the museum.

Mobi have created a great solution for this – an SD card with built in WiFi, which you can connect to an app on your smart device. The Eyefi Mobi SD card functions like a regular SDHC card, works on most cameras and thanks to the built-in WiFi, it pairs your camera to your phone, tablet or laptop where the images appear instantly.

Basically, this smart memory card means no more swapping cards, no cables and no emailing photos to yourself to view on your device, wherever you are in the world, as they will already be there.

A smart bikini!?

We all know that spending too much time in the sun can be dangerous, but keeping track of the time and remembering when to reapply sunscreen can also be tough.

But you needn’t worry any longer, since the Neviano UV Connect smart bikini includes a built-in UV sensor that connects to an app on your smartphone. The app can tell you when you’ve been in the sun for too long, allowing you to take a break. It even allows you to send a message to a partner or friend to let them know they need to reapply sunscreen.

An intelligent umbrella

Whenever you go on holiday, chances are that it might rain. But did you know that there is an umbrella that can send weather alerts to your phone? Wezzoo’s smart umbrella – Oombrella, will make sure you never step out into the rain unprepared again. It comes with a little capsule attached to the end of the handle, which has four sensors to measure temperature, humidity, air pressure and sunlight. The sensors communicate with your phone via Bluetooth and will send you an alert if it’s going to rain.

It’s helpful in other ways too. If you accidentally leave it at a bar or a restaurant, it can send its last known location to your phone. And when you’re getting a phone call, a buzzer and light inside the handle let you know.

And finally… a smart grill for the perfect barbeque

Nothing says holidays quite like a barbeque on a sunny day. Now connected technology means your cooking can be as perfect as the weather, with the iGrill from Weber. A Bluetooth thermometer is added to the grill, and then communicates with your smartphone to give you accurate, real-time information on the temperature of your food so you can ensure a perfect meal every time – and impress all of your friends!
