[Infographic] Data Breaches by the Numbers, Q1 2014: 26 People Fall Victim to a Data Breach Every Second

Last updated: 16 May 2016

After collecting publicly available information about worldwide data breaches, the Breach Level Index (BLI) showed that there were over 200 million data records lost or stolen in the first three months of 2014.

As our new infographic shows, that means there were over 2 million records lost or stolen every day. That’s 26 records a second.

If those figures alone weren’t alarming enough, only 1% of the 254 data breaches that occurred in the quarter were “secure breaches” – breaches where strong encryption, key management and/or authentication solutions rendered the compromised data useless.

Despite all the attention that the Target breach and other high-profile breaches have received recently, far too many organizations are continuing to rely on perimeter security and failing to employ the data protection methods mentioned above to ensure that, even when a breach occurs, the data itself remains secure.
