Black Hat 2016 starts this Saturday. Are you ready?
If you are making the trip out to Las Vegas for the global InfoSec conference here are a few tips from the Gemalto team to keep your information secure and make the most of your time at the show!
- Make a plan: Make sure you know what you want to do before you arrive in Las Vegas! Identify trainings, keynotes, briefings, and schedule dinners and meetings in advanced. Have you downloaded the conference app yet? Download the Black Hat app prior to arriving to Vegas to have everything you need to know about Black Hat in the palm of your hand.
- Travel light and comfortably: Las Vegas in the summer is hot and you will be doing a lot of walking. The distance from the front lobby of a hotel to the conference center can feel like miles so be prepared for the hike. The last thing you need during the week is to be lugging around a bunch of heavy equipment in uncomfortable shoes. Make sure to bring just what you need to sessions and wear sensible footwear that will allow you to make your way across the business hall pain free!
- Be wary of Wi-Fi: With so many hackers in one location you want to be mindful of what networks you are connecting to. Our recommendation would be to turn all devices in airplane mode and check for messages periodically throughout the day. If that does not work for you, make sure you are using your USB cable to connect to your personal hotspots and ALWAYS using your VPN.
- Avoid ATMs: Get your cash before you head to Las Vegas. Not only are ATM fees high when withdrawing money on the strip, but the risk is even higher. In previous years, hackers have tagged machines with skimmer or set up completely fake ones. Make sure your money is safe next week and have cash on hand.
- Network with your peers: Interacting live with your peers is a key benefit of any conference. Make sure you are taking full advantage of the networking opportunities at Black Hat including the sponsor thrown parties! Check out the full list here and make sure to pre-register to secure your spot.
- Remember to hydrate: As previously mentioned, Vegas gets hot in the summer so it’s important to stay hydrated – Beer doesn’t count! Make sure you are getting your recommended eight 8 ounce glasses of water daily to beat the heat and hangover.
