The car key of the future – your NFC mobile

Last updated: 20 March 2014

As you may have seen in our NFC free-running video, the potential uses for mobile contactless technology go way beyond payments in drugstores, fast food restaurants, cinemas etc. Access control is one of the services NFC phones can power, replacing employee ID badges to enter building and as reported by NFC World back in March, automotive manufacturers are looking to turn your phone into a car key.

Some car manufacturers such as Renault have been using proximity technologies for the last few years. In fact I used to have a Megane with a wireless card that let you enter the car and start the motor without taking the card/key out of your pocket. While this impressed my friends, the batteries needed changing often and I still had to remember the key. Personally, I am looking forward to the day I can leave the house with my phone and leave my ID badge, house keys, car keys and wallet at home but then again, I am a bit of a geek.
